Our mission is to give elementary & middle school kids the stepping stool into the world of programming and give students the outlet to develop self-confidence, curiosity and creativity. 

Hi! My name’s Rahi Mitra and I’m a high schooler from NYC.

Growing up in NYC, you’d think it’s the city filled with opportunities. But for me, It felt the quite opposite. I never had a role model and never really knew what I wanted to be. My dad was a taxi driver and my mom was a stay-at-home mom who worked at Dunkin Donuts once and younger me used to be embarrassed of it. 

 

I went to a predominantly white school where everyone’s parents were lawyers, doctors, and business owners. I could never see myself as these occupations. 

 

It wasn’t until my dad began to change his occupation.

 

In my 6th grade year, my dad had decided that he wanted to become a software engineer. I watched my immigrant father with no education in the United States build his way up into the technology industry. 

 

I suddenly began to see my dad as my role model and realized that I wanted to work in the technology industry; An industry I thought only the smartest men could enter.

I regret my embarrassment for my dad’s taxi driving, but his resilience has taught me I have nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, his hardship has taught me the value of education. 

 

My goal is to help and inspire elementary and middle school students to discover their passion in STEM in my local community. My situation made me realize if it were not for my dad, I might have never seen technology as a viable career for me. 

 

I want to help kids find their role models. I want children to find enjoyment and interest within programming and make their own games and websites. I want to help break the stereotype of only smart men can be in STEM and that women of color like me can also be in these industries. 

 

My mission for KidsKode is to help find kids find enjoyment and interest within computer programming to be able to make their own games while developing a sense of passion for STEM in an interactive way.
